In the United States, black women receive the fewest messages and fewer responses to their sent messages—75 percent of the communication received by their white counterparts, a pattern that seems common to online dating as a whole. I finally decided that, in order to have a better chance at successful dating experiences, I had to become the chooser. Because without fail, on every occasion when someone has seen fit to tell me I am lucky enough to be considered their type, thanks entirely to whatever quirk in the universe brought my Jamaican father and white-British mother together to create a child, I have not been happy.
I chatted with men and went on some dates, ultimately seeing a few different prospects for a month or two over the next fourteen months. One area in which white supremacy remains to be pervasive is in our perceptions of beauty within the western world. Even so, I know that I will have to wait a while before I meet someone who makes active liberation from these oppressive standards a lifetime goal of theirs, and who will not be offended at my audacity to step outside of gendered and racialized expectations of desire and propriety. Ninety percent of study respondents state they are straight, and 16 percent of those claim they have ever been attracted to another man.
