Chemical weatheringis the process by which rocks are decomposed, dissolved or loosened by chemical processes to form residual materials. This technique relies on the property of half-life. Weathering includes information on water and water freezing, plant roots, wind, and carbon dioxide. Great hands-on lab activity using Skittles to show weathering and erosion in action. That emitted light, the signal, can be used to calculate when the sample was last exposed to sunlight. If a radioactive isotope is said to have a half-life of 5, years that means after 5, years exactly half of it will have decayed from the parent isotope into the daughter isotopes. Weathering and erosion are concepts students can readily identify with, and with simple experiments students can make the connections to this natural process on a larger scale. Figure 1 8.
